We have enjoyed to two concerts in the last few months, the first was flute accompanied by piano and the second, a reed trio, comprising clarinet, oboe and bassoon.
The first took place on a beautiful autumn evening towards the end of September where we listened to the music whilst admiring amazing views of the local countryside through a large picture window. Emma Halnan played the flute accompanied by Daniel King Smith on the piano. Emma is a former winner of a BBC Young Musician award and it was clear to us all that she is a very accomplished musician. The music played had a strong French influence. She finished with a very rapid and energetic ‘Carmen Fantasy’ on themes from Bizet’s famous opera.
On a very wet Sunday in mid-October, it was good to get out for another concert; this time Trio Volant comprising Tom Evans on clarinet, Beatrice Hubble on oboe and Richard Beards on bassoon. They formed eight years ago while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music and it was clear that they very much enjoyed performing together.
They started with some operatic music with well-known tunes from ‘Barber of Seville’, ‘Marriage of Figaro’ and ‘Carmen’. During the evening, it was interesting to hear each of the individual instruments playing solo parts so that you could appreciate the different sounds each made.
Our next concert, an ensemble of flute, viola and harp on is in April, details of which will be in the next issue of the Diary. If you would like to find out more, please contact Ian Hamilton using the details at the front of the Diary.
As ever, our thanks go to our generous hosts, Alan and Virginia Burdon-Cooper and Sue and Tom Thomson.
